Trends In Australian Government Funding of Health and Medical Research

As we head into another year, researchers are gearing up for new rounds of research funding applications. For Australian health and medical researchers, this means making key decisions about funding sources to target—whether MRFF, NHMRC, industry, philanthropic organisations, or others.
The analysis I'm sharing here illustrate MRFF and NHMRC funding trends from 2015 to 2024. Since its first major funding round launched in late 2016, the MRFF has significantly increased Commonwealth funding for medical and health research but selecting the most appropriate funding source for your research is increasingly important.
The data highlights clear trends, aligned with the priorities of each funder. The MRFF focuses on strategic priorities and the translation and implementation of health and medical research. Researchers working in more applied research areas like clinical medicine, health services, and public health research will likely see much higher success in MRFF schemes, provided their work is aligned with national priorities. Meanwhile, NHMRC continues to support a broad spectrum of research, from basic science to applied studies, although success in translational research is more likely through MRFF pathways.
As you plan your applications, take a moment to reflect on your bidding profile. Are you targeting the funding source that aligns best with your research focus and objectives? Making strategic choices can enhance your chances of success and help maximise the impact of your work.
